Being Black means always having to answer these questions and always having to explain, ‘What is it like to be Black?’ Why am I/we forced to know about you and you know thing about me/us?
What do you hope the viewers of this exhibit will come away thinking about?
My challenge to you, is to educate yourself. Be mindful and interact with more people of color.
What is it like being Black in Santa Cruz?
We are black, yes.... but we are people trying to survive this f*ed up world like everyone else. It is impossible for us to simply assimilate. Our skin is too dark and our up-bringing is too proud, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
People are trying to twist that because they don’t understand
What does Black Lives Matter mean to you?
Black Lives Matter just means, “No lives matter, until Black Lives Matter”. That’s all that that is. Some people want to take it as “Oh, now this is reverse racism.” There can never be such a thing. You know your ancestry. You know where you came from. We don’t know that. That was ripped from us.
